WBC Muaythai referees play a crucial role in ensuring athlete safety and promoting fair play in competitions. These dedicated individuals possess a profound understanding of the sport and its rules, enabling them to effectively monitor and regulate matches. Their keen eye for detail and quick decision-making skills empower them to identify potential fouls, prevent hazardous situations, and maintain a level playing field. By enforcing rules, they protect the well-being of athletes, minimising the risk of injuries or unfair advantages.

Furthermore, WBC Muaythai referees contribute significantly to the integrity of the sport, fostering an environment where athletes can compete on equal grounds. This ensures that the competition remains exciting, respectful, and enjoyable for all involved. Their unwavering commitment to upholding fairness and safety makes them an indispensable part of any WAKO event.

WBC Muaythai referees are required to complete a referee’s course before they can officiate at sanctioned events. Upon finishing the course, new referees will be asked about their availability and invited to participate in WBC Muaythai -sanctioned competitions.

All referees undergo continuous assessment and coaching by WBC Muaythai’s Chief Referee across all levels of domestic competition. Each year at the Nationals, this ongoing assessment may lead to a change in referee class based on performance and attendance.

C Class: Novice referees with little to no experience. C-class referees gain experience as corner judges under the guidance of an experienced A-class referee.

B Class: Referees who demonstrate a solid understanding of the rules and consistently apply them in a timely manner. To further their experience and training, B class referees will be asked to act as centre referees under the guidance of an A-class referee. It typically takes 2 years to reach the level of competency required for B class. Assessment for B class usually occurs at the WBC Muaythai Nationals.

A Class: Referees who confidently understand all the rules and can officiate across all disciplines. They should be proficient in using Sportdata and effectively manage the fighting area as well as the Junior referees under their supervision.

Once a referee achieves the status of a qualified domestic A-class referee, they can progress to International events as an International C-class referee. Referees are expected to gain experience at multiple internationals and WAKO world cups before being considered to represent WBC at Intercontinental or World Championships.
